Updated Gumstix BSP Layer for Yocto Project is being tested

adam
Good day everybody :)

We are letting everyone know the development branch of the Gumstix's BSP layer is being updated and tested. It is now on Yocto Project 1.4.1 (Dylan). There have been some big changes in Dylan. Along with performance improvements, it supports systemd natively, and Smart has replaced Zypper.

We would love to go master as soon as possible, so it would be nice if the community can provide feedback in the next week or so.

If you are not familiar with Gumstix BSP layer, please visit our Yocto Project Repo page. You can also visit the layer repository directly: meta-gumstix meta-gumstix-extras  Be sure to checkout the 'dev' branch. For more information on Yocto Project, visit Yocto Project.

You can download the binaries only if you prefer:

Has anyone had any luck with the Overo board USB host port, TI DSP, or

Re: Updated Gumstix BSP Layer for Yocto Project is being tested

Peter A. Bigot
I've gotten an mt9v032 to behave somewhat (yavta for stills and mplayer2
for X11 video both work), and some basic TI DSP (gstreamer-ti) to work
though pieces from meta-ti do not seem reliable with Linux 3.5.  No
issues with host USB.  I don't use the repo repository but instead go
straight to the dylan branches of meta-gumstix and meta-gumstix-extras.

Re: Updated Gumstix BSP Layer for Yocto Project is being tested

jimparkhurst00
I've found a glitch in apt-get. When I try to do a upgrade I get an unexpected error in method http. root@overo:~# apt-get update E: Method http has died unexpectedly! E: Sub-process http returned an error code (1) I am unable to upgrade the packages. There is a bug in the package but I'm not that strong to resolve the issue.

In reply to this post by Peter A. Bigot
Peter,

How were you able to get the image to compile? I get the following error
with the TI libraries enabled:

ERROR: Nothing RPROVIDES 'ti-dsplib' (but
yocto/poky/meta-gumstix-extras/recipes-images/gumstix/gumstix-dsp-image.bb
RDEPENDS on or otherwise requires it

Thanks,
-Geoff

Re: Updated Gumstix BSP Layer for Yocto Project is being tested

Peter A. Bigot
What's the SHA1 and remote for the HEAD of your meta-gumstix-extras
repository?  Or, more specifically, where did you get gumstix-dsp-image.bb?

I don't have a gumstix-dsp-image recipe anywhere, nor any reference to
ti-dsplib (there is a ti-dsplink).  My testing has been with
gumstix-xfce-image or core-lsb-image with these packages added:

GUMSTIX_DSP_INSTALL = " \
     gstreamer-ti \
     gst-plugins-good-meta \
     gst-plugins-base-meta \
"

GUMSTIX_ISP_INSTALL = " \
     media-ctl \
     v4l-utils \
     yavta \
     raw2rgbpnm \
"

I'm using the current head of the dylan branches off gumstix github
repos, plus the dylan branch of meta-ti with some patches not yet pushed
upstream to fix build issues.  They are currently available at:
https://github.com/pabigot/meta-ti/tree/not-for-pull/dylan

Here's one sequence from a recent commit in meta-gumstix-extras/dylan:

commit ab083c3ab38f332e44936edb69397fd93046e196
Author: Peter A. Bigot <[hidden email]>
Date:   Tue Aug 6 08:19:13 2013 -0500

     raw2rgbpnm: add recipe

This utility converts raw Bayer image files to netpbm color images.

     Example of use with Caspa:

       media-ctl -r
       media-ctl -v -l '"mt9v032 3-005c":0->"OMAP3 ISP CCDC":0[1]'
       media-ctl -v -l '"OMAP3 ISP CCDC":1->"OMAP3 ISP CCDC output":0[1]'
       media-ctl -v -V '"mt9v032 3-005c":0 [SGRBG10 752x480]'
       media-ctl -v -V '"OMAP3 ISP CCDC":1 [SGRBG10 752x480]'
       yavta -p -f SGRBG10 -s 752x480 -n 4 \
         --capture=11 --skip=10 \
         $(media-ctl -e "OMAP3 ISP CCDC output") \
         --file=img-vl.bin
       raw2rgbpnm -s 752x480 -f SGRBG10 img-vl.bin img-vl.pnm

Re: Updated Gumstix BSP Layer for Yocto Project is being tested

gbaker386
Peter,

gumstix-dsp-image is one I created on my own and added TI DSP from
instructions here

http://www.sleepyrobot.com/?p=210

I still cannot get everything to compile. I decided to try to build both
the gumstix-console, and gumstix-xfce standard images. I found that
system-analyze and ntp would not compile, so I removed them. However
when building the XFCE image I get the following error:

Computing transaction...error: Can't install
pango-module-basic-x-1.30.0-r1@armv7a_vfp_neon: no package provides
libpangox-1.0.so.0

  Has anyone else found this?

Thanks,
-Geoff

Is "ubiformat" removed from mtd-utils in dylan branch? I don't see the command anymore when switching to dylan.

Re: Updated Gumstix BSP Layer for Yocto Project is being tested

Ash Charles
It looks like it is in ubiformat-klibc package from the
ubi-utils-klibc recipe.  I ran into this earlier today and can add
these to the gumstix-console-image once I've confirmed that they work
okay.
Compared with the instructions from Steve,
http://www2.sakoman.com/OMAP/how-to-write-an-ubifs-rootfs-image-to-nand.html,
these utilities seem to be picky about the ordering of command flags.

Note, I had to add the meta-initramfs layer to my bblayers.

Re: Updated Gumstix BSP Layer for Yocto Project is being tested

Peter A. Bigot
Yes, I think I verified some sort of UBI operations under Linux/dylan by
installing mtd-utils-ubifs.

I didn't try updating the file system from Linux; I added the necessary
commands to u-boot and verified it that way, which I personally find
more convenient (tftp the files then copy them into the partitions).
The mtd and ubi command support was merged into meta-gumstix sometime
recently.  Commit ff7b8f1e117ea974c9455096da1d9cd31e2ea009 and its
predecessor in meta-gumstix have some additional information.

Cannot Create Dylan Branch XFCE image

gbaker386
In reply to this post by Ash Charles
I cannot create the development branch XFCE image. I get the following error:

Computing transaction...error: Can't install
pango-module-basic-x-1.30.0-r1@armv7a_vfp_neon: no package provides
libpangox-1.0.so.0

Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks,
-Geoff

There's something wrong with your environment, specifically the branch
of poky that you are using.  Dylan uses pango-1.32.5.  The basic-x
module of Pango was removed in Pango 1.31.  Or you have another layer
which has the wrong version of pango at a higher priority.

Re: Updated Gumstix BSP Layer for Yocto Project is being tested

In reply to this post by Peter A. Bigot
Peter,

I reviewed your branch, but I do not see anything specific for
correcting the compile problems. What I have now does compile (maybe I
made the same changes because I did fix a few things. But what I do not
understand is why (or how) the DSP functions without the other tools:

#  ti-dsplink
#  ti-codec-engine
#  ti-dmai
#  ti-dspbios
#  ti-dsplink-module
#  ti-cmem-module

These were all needed in the older build environment, but now you say
they are not needed?

Thanks,
-Geoff

The only compile problems I had were corrected by adding a patch to the
overo.conf file in meta-gumstix (which is now in the dylan branch), and
fixing a couple recipe problems in meta-ti (which are in the branch I
mentioned).  I only build "gstreamer-ti" and whatever that pulls in,
which is at least a couple of the packages you name.

The top four commits in this list were necessary for me, from the
not-for-pull/dylan branch of meta-ti on my github page:

Some of them are needed for gstreamer-ti.  None of them are needed for
the ISP functionality through which the camera is accessed, which was my
main focus.  omap3isp is now entirely supported by the upstream kernel
plus user-level utilities.

AFAIK nobody's gotten gstreamer-ti to work with the ISP /dev/video*
devices in post 2.6 Linux kernels.  Changes in the V4L2 API probably
explain why gstreamer-ti (if not gstreamer generally) produces ioctl
errors with those devices as sources.

I was able to get the basic examples from
http://www.jumpnowtek.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=81:gumstix-dsp-gstreamer&catid=35:gumstix&Itemid=67
for both local test and network streaming to function, though sometimes
stopping the process resulted in kernel errors.  I don't know how much
of the DSP processing chain those commands actually tested.  I couldn't
find any other tests for the DSP infrastructure and have no use cases of
my own, so I stopped playing with it.

There are newer versions of the DSP tools but TI hasn't provided Yocto
recipes for them.  I'm not sure what plans TI has to improve Linux/OMAP
support.
