No wifi love after r1411 flash

Brian Gregory

How do I get my CF MA701 card to work (as it did before with the wireless.opts based config) with the latest revision? (I just grabbed 1411) I flashed my gumstix-400mx and I can’t seem to get the wifi to work. (I wish I hadn’t – can someone recommend a stable buildroot?)

Here are the lines from my otherwise unmodified /etc/network/interfaces:

auto mwlan0

iface mwlan0 inet dhcp

pre-up /sbin/iwconfig $IFACE key <wep-key> key open essid <essid> txpower 100mW

(of course the real file has a real hex wep-key and a real essid – please don’t lecture me about the use of WEP. Trust me, I know it’s bad but I need to use it for reasons I can’t change)

When the system boots I get the following error: (also when I issue “ifup mwlan0”)

Error for wireless request “Set Encode” (8B2A) :

                SET failed on device mwlan0 : No such device.

Here is the output from iwconfig:

wifi0     IEEE 802.11b  ESSID:"test"  Nickname:""

          Mode:Master  Access Point: Not-Associated   Bit Rate:11 Mb/s

          Sensitivity=1/3

          Retry short limit:8   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off

          Encryption key:off

          Power Management:off

wlan0     IEEE 802.11b  ESSID:"test"  Nickname:""

          Mode:Master  Access Point: Not-Associated   Bit Rate:11 Mb/s

          Sensitivity=1/3

          Retry short limit:8   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off

          Encryption key:off

          Power Management:off

          Link Quality:0  Signal level:0  Noise level:0

          Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0

          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0

What have I done wrong?

Brian Gregory

try dropping the m from the /etc/network/interfaces settings. e.g.

>snip<
auto wlan0

 iface wlan0 inet dhcp

 pre-up /sbin/iwconfig $IFACE key <wep-key> key open essid <essid> txpower
 100mW

Re: No wifi love after r1411 flash

There is already a line in the interfaces file for wlan, which I'm assuming
that is why it shows in iwconfig. I commented out the mlan0 lines and I no
longer get the error but the configuration is still wrong on boot (It looks
like the defaults: ESSID: "test") but when I issue "ifup wlan0" and then run
iwconfig I get the following:

wifi0     IEEE 802.11b  ESSID:"<correct>"  Nickname:""
          Mode:Master  Access Point: Not-Associated   Bit Rate:11 Mb/s
          Sensitivity=1/3
          Retry short limit:8   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:<key-removed>   Security mode:open
          Power Management:off

wlan0     IEEE 802.11b  ESSID:"<correct>"  Nickname:""
          Mode:Master  Access Point: Not-Associated   Bit Rate:11 Mb/s
          Sensitivity=1/3
          Retry short limit:8   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:<key-removed>   Security mode:open
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality:0  Signal level:0  Noise level:0
          Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0

So it's close, but still not working.
