Kernel panic on Chestnut lcd43

Sriram Sundararajan
I am running the Overo EarthStorm COM on the Chestnut43 with  I have the following env settings:
defaultdisplay=lcd43
dvimode=480x272MR-16@60

On booting, I get the following error:

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! exitcode=0x0000000b

I'm using oe-core, meta-gumstix from Tony Schnitzel. Kernel: linux-omap_3.5, linux-omap_3.6 (rc-7). I enabled the folowing settings:
CONFIG_INPUT_TOUCHSCREEN=y and CONFIG_TOUCHSCREEN_ADS7846=m.
What am I missing? Has someone overcome the same issue?

Thanks
Sriram

I tried setting defaultdisplay=dvi and this time the overo boots up to the login prompt. However, the display is pretty mangled when the qtdemo screen comes up. I also see the following messages.
Starting PVR
Error: missing filename.
FATAL: Module omaplfb not found.
FATAL: Module bufferclass_ti not found.

Just posting more info.

When I started I had also kernel crashes. These could be fixed by
changing parameters nandargs and mmcargs [1].

I also had the kernel crash (I tried with a 3.5 and a 3.6 kernel).
Changing defaultdisplay from lcd43 to dvi allowed the system to boot.
But there's no output on the LCD with that setting.  How can I enable
the LCD if the uboot env variable must be set to dvi in order to work
around the crash?  LCD works fine with a 3.4 kernel
