HowTo enable reliable TWL watchdog

deekay
Hi!

I am a gumstix sand user and I have been using a kernel version 1.5.0 (I think). The issue is that it does not have a watchdog. I cannot find it under /dev. An other issue is that the bb recipe for the kernel was lost due to PC hw crash, so I do not really know my current settings that I configured using menuconfig a time ago...

Is it a way to enable a reliable watchdog without rebuilding the kernel? Like writing something in a boot.scr script?
The thing is that my current kernel works fine (after many hours of tweeking) and I would like to skip reconfigure and rebuilding it again, if possible that is.

My idea is to have a watchdog turned on as early as possible during boot and start feeding it as late as possible to cover any errors during the whole startup process.

I have read that the TWL4030 is more reliable than the OMAP watchdog. But I might be wrong...

Happy for answers!

As I have understood, it is possible to write scripts in boot.scr. Can it be solved in this way: - A standalone program/module is created and saved in the file system. This program access the WDT (watchdog) hardware and perhaps has some arguments for feeding the dog etc. - The above program is accessed from boot.scr during boot-up, and starts/initiates the WDT. - Once the fs is mounted and all other things are up and running, the program above can be used as WDT feeder by an application. Is the above scenario realistic? Again, my idea is to not re-build any kernel och u-boot etc. Has any ony done anything similar or have ideas on hotwo do this, please give me hints

Deekay: if you don't build support for the TWL watchdog in the kernel, there is no way to enable it...

Do you mean you have x-loader version 1.5.0? No kernel that old would ever run on an Overo... Type 'uname -a' in your linux terminal session to figure out what version you're working off right now.

To enable the TWL watchdog via your kernel config, add the following line:

CONFIG_TWL4030_WATCHDOG=y

And if it is present (mustn't be if you have nothing under /dev...), comment out this line:

#CONFIG_OMAP_WATCHDOG=y

Rebuild, and voila, working TWL watchdog

Deekay,

boot.scr is a script consumed by the gumstix bootloader (u-boot). It runs commands that have been defined and implemented inside that bootloader. I am not aware of cases where it can run programs from a file system (I might be wrong!). If you don't feel like rebuilding your kernel or your bootloader, then it will be difficult to start the watchdog. Note there might be somewhere out there who has implemented this feature in u-boot and could help.
Then the rest of your idea is realistic. You can write a small application that pets the watchdog regularly once fs is mounted.

As far as TWL4030 watchdog vs main processor is concerned, if I remember well, you can't disable TWL4030 watchdog. It means that once you have enabled it, you need to pet it until you power off your device. If your device runs off battery, this could be a problem as you would need to wake it up just to pet TWL4030 watchdog.

hope this helps
Gilles.

Akram: Many thanks for you reply. I was worried that I need to re-build the thing. But I guess that the "driver" reads and writes to TWL via I2C. I spotted the source code for the TWL4030_watchdog.c, so my guess was that it would be possible to build a stand alone program for accessing the device. Without modifying the kernel that is.

Well, well... I might need to do some backward engineering after all.

I will however, give you the uname -a information shortly.

gilles TALIS: Thanks for the reply. No I have not found anything about doing it from u-boot... yet...
No my app is not running from batteries so the WDT can be fed continously. Prebebly by a background application.

Btw, if I must include the TWL4030 support in the kernel to make this work, it must be compiled into the uImage or u-boot I guess? Do I need to modify the fs as well?

Deekay: you are correct, you can write a user-space program if you wanted, but keep in mind that it's not possible to have something that runs from initial boot all the way through to user-land in the kernel. You'd want to enable the watchdog early on (x-loader...), and prevent it being re-configured in u-boot and the kernel (the state gets nuked during initialisation of the kernel...).

One reason you probably just want to rebuild the kernel is that it keeps things tidy: the only way you can write to the twl manually with i2c is to use the I2C_SLAVE_FORCE macro - which basically lets you use a slave device even if a driver has reserved it (which it will have, because the kernel sets things up and communicates with the tps at boot...).  I've not had any nasty collisions when doing this in the past (when controlling the LED drivers on the TPS), but I would still approach it with caution.

Re: HowTo enable reliable TWL watchdog

This post was updated on .
I am a bit lost among the different branches of the gumsix overo repository....
The Wiki sais one thing, and some threads say an other.

What is latest build repository to use for the Gumstix Sand? I am about to configure and build a new u-boot, uImage and MLO to get my WDT up and running. I think I am able to restore the .bb file (from ha hard drive that crashed) for my previous build, so I plan to use it as reference when configuring prior a new build.

Kind Regards

Hi!

After some digging in my crached harddrive, I found my .config file used when building my kernel!
So, I git cloned the 2.6.39 kernel from sakoman. Editet my .config file as this:
CONFIG_WATCHDOG=y
CONFIG_WATCHDOG_NOWAYOUT=y
# CONFIG_SOFT_WATCHDOG is not set
# CONFIG_OMAP_WATCHDOG is not set
CONFIG_TWL4030_WATCHDOG=y

And it seems to work =) . It is enough to just write a character to /dev/watchdog once and then , about 30sec later, the WDT kicks in and resets.

Follow up questions:
1. How do I change the WDT timeout?
2. I noticed that the kernel references a path in fs under /lib/modules/2.6.39+/. But in my fs, the path is without +.
I can add a sym link that links from 2.6.39+ to 2.6.39, but I would like to not edit the fs. How can I change the path in kernel? Is it by redefine UNAME_RELEASE somewhere?
3. What can I write in u-boot, or else where, to start the WDT as soon as possible during boot? is it in boot.scr?

Many thanks to all helpful experts.

Re: HowTo enable reliable TWL watchdog

Deekay: it may be worth setting CONFIG_WATCHDOG_NOWAYOUT - this way, even if you close the device file nicely things will still go BOOM.  Perhaps this is not what you want, though?

As it is, when you close /dev/watchdog gracefully, the system will not auto reboot. I suspect that the echo in to the device file both opens/closes things nicely.

After building and copying the new uImage to my mmc, I booted it up and now
I have the /dev/watchdog. However, I did not see anything about watchdog in
console during booting...

I try  # echo 'j' > /dev/watchdog that I think shall force a reset after
about 1 min (?) but nothing happend.

Have I missed something?
