Building Yocto for Gumstix/Overo (RE: Connection Refused to Steve's Git repo)

Arne Lie
Hi,

I'm currently setting up Yocto for Gumstix/Overo following www.jumpnowtek.com instructions. I've finally managed to create x-loader/uBoot/uImage/rootfs that boots (console-image) my EarthStorm/Tobi with the following "patches":
1. in build/conf/local.conf: add the line PREFERRED_PROVIDER_udev = "systemd"
2. in meta-jumpnow/recipes-kernel/linux/linux-sakoman_3.2.bb, change
   SRC_URI = "git://www.sakoman.com/git/linux-omap-2.6.git to
   SRC_URI = "git://www2.sakoman.com/git/linux-omap-2.6.git (following the advice below)
   Perhaps I should have tried SRC_URI = "git://www.sakoman.com/git/linux.git instead?

Perhaps this info is of any use also to others.

Best regards

Arne Lie

What problem led you to adding that PREFERRED_PROVIDER_udev line?

The Yocto denzil branch recently merged in a systemd update to v189
required for Angstrom; this introduced a conflict with udev.

The SRC_URI patches are already incorporated into the meta-gumstix
repository.

I'm doing final tests on some patches for Yocto Gumstix builds
supporting DSP and libgles (denzil with meta-gumstix, and danny with
meta-gumstix-community), and hope to make those available later today.

So much for trying to follow stable Yocto branches...

I'll fix my repos.

FWIW, I do put the last commits that I tested in the README's of my repos.

Yes, it must be that one, sorry, I did not write down the error message, but it said something about systemd.

My Yocto/poky/denzil started to throw error messages after a git pull. So I deleted all and started all over again. Now I cannot create images any more due to errors. I have tried both with and without PREFERRED_PROVIDER_udev = "systemd" in my conf/local.conf.
Host computer:
Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTE 64-bit
Linux version 3.2.0-35-generic

The error I get with it included is this, anybody who can aassist?:

Re: Building Yocto for Gumstix/Overo (RE: Connection Refused to Steve's Git repo)

Peter A. Bigot
Upstream recently merged a refinement because the previous one broke too
many people.  Commit message below.  (The commit message does not
reflect when it actually got integrated into the denzil branch.)

I believe they're about to "freeze" yocto denzil 1.2.2, so that may be a
good point to use in any repo-based distributions.

Note that he screwed up the documentation; you really need:

     PREFERRED_VERSION_systemd = "v189"

Peter

commit c17d774553b8e95f142bf6388aa70f48ce8cf1ce
Author: Eric Bénard <[hidden email]>
Date:   Mon Dec 24 13:21:43 2012 +0100

     systemd_v189: add D_P=-1

     now users have the choice :
     * keep the old behaviour when not using systemd :
     PREFERRED_PROVIDER_udev = "udev"
     * switch to systemd (while keeping upgrade path) :
     PREFERRED_PROVIDER_udev = "systemd"
     PREFFERED_VERSION_systemd = "v189"

Re: Building Yocto for Gumstix/Overo (RE: Connection Refused to Steve's Git repo)

Scott Ellis
I went with this in local.conf which reverts to old behaviour.

PREFERRED_PROVIDER_udev = "udev"

I tried with the new systemd option, but systemd ends up generating a number
of circular startup dependency issues on my images.

Maybe they are harmless or easy to fix, but I don't feel like dealing with them
right now.

Hi,

Just did a bitbake jumpnow-console-image with your PREFERRED_PROVIDER_udev = "udev" , and it went all the way with building xloader, u-boot, uImage, and rootfs. Thanks so much!!! :-)

Best regards
Arne

In reply to this post by Scott Ellis
Yes, it looks like using systemd to supply udev will only work with
Angstrom now.
